Department of Oral and Maxillifacial Surgery

Introduction

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of congenital or acquired diseases, dysfunction, defects or injuries of the mouth, jaws, face, neck and associated regions. The department is actively involved in academic / teaching programme as well as patient care.

Academic/teaching programme:

Training is provided to undergraduate students(BDS) during their Third and Final years in Oral Surgery in the form of theory lecture classes, clinical postings, chair side teaching, demonstrations and small group discussions. Dental education is delivered through comprehensive didactic and clinical sessions. The broad experience and specialisation of the academic staff combine to provide the dental undergraduate with the requisite skills for general practice.

Postgraduate training programme leading to the degree of MDS( Master of Dental Surgery) in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with Oral Implantology.

A Comprehensive 3 years full time course including hands on training in most aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Students also get posting in subjects such as Surgical oncology, Neurosurgery, Anaesthesiology etc. as prescribed by DCI..
Students are trained to conduct a research / clinical study as part of thesis required by Rajiv Gandhi University.

The department has an excellent departmental library. The library is well stocked with books and journals and has internet facilities for medline and literature searching. Articles not held locally can be ordered by the library staff from the sources and are usually available with a few days. The department has been furnished with state of the art dental chairs and provided with a minor dental surgery and implant logy unit

The staff in the department are actively involved in the teaching programme for under graduates and post graduates to update their knowledge by attending CME’s and National and international conferences by presenting papers and have various national and international publications to their credit.

The Patient Care:

The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a busy unit, committed to provide a comprehensive service.Some of the commonly provided treatment procedures are as follows-

Minor Oral Surgeries under local anaesthesia with or without conscious sedation .

Extraction.

Third Molar Surgery(impaction).

Periapical Surgery.

Biopsy.

Cyst Enucleations.

Pre-Prosthetic Surgeries etc.

Primary management of Maxillofacial Trauma in the casuality clinic with in the college Hospital.

Major Maxillofacial Surgeries under general anaesthesia also done in the college Hospital

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of facial fractures.

Orthognathic Surgeries

Surgeries for Salivary Gland Diseases.

Oral Cancer Resection and Reconstruction.

Tumor Surgeries.

TMJ Surgeries.

Distraction Osteogenesis etc.

Treating patient with cleft lip & palate deformities

Diagnosis & treatment of head, neck & facial deformities.

Treating cancer patient by firmly adhering to international cancer patient protocols.

Treating patient with salivary gland disease, vascular & other disease of oral hard & soft tissues.

State of the art RVG units to help in diagnosing disease & matinaing records.

Oral Implanatology.

Peripheral out reach clinics/camps:

The department provides expert consultation and services at Kidwai Oncology Hospital, Jayanagar General Hospital. The department actively participates in the out reach camps conducted by the College on holidays (Eg: Sunday ) thereby serving the needy at their door steps.
